Honeywell
will provide the latest building management system technology for
the new Cairngorm Funicular Railway.
BRACKNELL, UK, 13 SEPTEMBER 2001
– Passenger
comfort in the base and summit stations on the new Cairngorm
Funicular Railway will be assured by the latest building management
system (BMS) technology from Honeywell’s Enterprise Service
Solutions business. Heating
and air conditioning will be controlled by a Honeywell Excel 500
control system chosen for this prestigious project by the main
mechanical and engineering contractors, N G Bailey & Co. of
Ilkley, West Yorkshire.
The Cairngorm Funicular Railway is a Ł15 million project in the
Cairngorm Mountains, an important Scottish tourist area.
It will comprise the funicular (cable-operated) railway
itself, a base lodge with facilities catering and a ticket office,
and a top station including a restaurant, bar, shop and visitor
centre. Honeywell will
supply, engineer and commission the controls in both buildings.
This will include five control panels and the operational and
management interface, which will be PC-based using Honeywell’s
Excel Building Supervisor (XBS).
The PC workstation will be based at the base lodge, with a
dial-up link to the top building. There are no comfort systems at the railway’s middle
station, which merely provides access to a ski tow.
Whilst a competitive tender was
important to N G Bailey & Co. in its choice of the BMS supplier,
it chose Honeywell because they two companies had worked with each
other very successfully on previous projects.
The railway is due to open in
December 2001 and will have two carriages pulled by a cable between
the tracks. As one
carriage goes up, the other moves down.
In winter the railway will transport skiers with a six-minute
journey time and a capacity of 120 without seating.
In the summer it will carry tourists with a capacity of 90,
including 50 seated, and the journey will be longer to allow
visitors to enjoy the scenery.
The railway will replace two
chair lifts, providing greater comfort and higher reliability,
since it will be able to operate in the windy conditions prevalent
in the highlands. Presently,
high winds often prevent chair lift operation.
