Elsy and Gibbons fits Honeywell control products as standard on its "Elson" hot water systems.

BRACKNELL, UK, 14 MAY 2001 – Elsy & Gibbons has been manufacturing "Elson" combination tanks for home hot water systems for over 80 years. The latest ranges of pre-plumbed and pre-wired tank systems provide the ideal solution for local authorities, housing associations and contractors because they provide a complete factory-tested package including hot water storage tank, primary circulating pump, plumbing manifold and Honeywell heating controls. The complete system is mounted on a purpose-made stand with shelving for speedy installation in an airing cupboard.

"Elson packages reduce time spent on site and therefore the installation cost," explained David Middlemast, technical manager with Elsy & Gibbons. "Being pre- assembled and tested, they allow fast on-site installation to the boiler, radiator circuit, electricity supply and hot taps.

"We make two types: Amerpak is for sealed primary systems whilst Amber is open vented. Both use a pre-plumbed manifold that has a three-port valve and pump – it makes the basic combination tank into a complete, fully pumped hot water system. We provide a choice of variations and options but we employ Honeywell products as standard and the control schemes are all based on the 'industry standard' Honeywell Y-plan."

"Sometimes local authorities and housing associations have installations where the hot water tank is in the loft rather than the airing cupboard, but they wish to retain our pre-plumbed manifold and controls package," revealed Dave Middlemast. "This enables them to reduce installation time on site and eliminates the possibility of installation errors. In these cases we provide a bracket-mounted manifold assembly that simply screws to the cupboard wall.

"More importantly for local authorities and housing associations, the manifold assembly – whether fitted separately or part of a pre-plumbed unit – standardises the heating and hot water installation ensuring consistency throughout the range of differing property types and subsequent heating installations. The manifold is also suitable for use with unvented cylinders and any typical gas fired or oil boiler from back boilers to high efficiency condensing boilers."

The majority of Amerpak and Amber units employ a Honeywell control pack comprising a mid-position valve, cylinder thermostat and wiring centre, all pre-wired and ready-mounted, as well as a Honeywell room thermostat and programmer. "We standardised on Honeywell products for several reasons, but particularly because they are the industry standard, we rarely get any problems and the back-up from the company is very good."

While Elsy & Gibbons employs a variety of Honeywell products, the most commonly used package features an elegant T6360 room thermostat, a ST1000 time switch, either a V4043 zone valve or a V4073 three-way mid-position diverter valve, and a wiring centre that simplifies wiring termination and identifies the connections clearly for maintenance.

"Housing Associations and local authorities have a long-term view of their investments, observed David Middlemast. "The Elson products address their needs for infrequent maintenance and simple servicing when it is required. Servicing is simple, because the Elson product is basically a plumbed three-port valve and a pump, plus a Honeywell wiring centre which is well marked, so it is clear where each wire goes to."

Where required by a local authority, Elsy & Gibbons builds custom assemblies. These have included, for example, Honeywell S-plan systems, Smartfit low voltage systems and Honeywell AQ6000 boiler management systems. "AQ6000 provides full comfort control by on/off control of the boiler on a pre-determined cycling basis, using a combination of outside air temperature, flow water temperature and room temperature sensors," he explained.

Another Elson product is the "Coral Si" thermal-store, which provides a house with indirectly-heated hot water at mains pressure, without the need for an unvented cylinder system. In this product, the stored water is maintained at 75 degrees C and within a 5 degree differential. "While the surface-mounted Honeywell L641 tank thermostat is ideal for Amerpak and Amber systems, for the Coral Si we employ the Honeywell L6188 Aquastat, which is installed within a pocket into the tank and has the advantages of being tamper-proof and very accurate. We set the target temperature and differential on the Aquastat."
