Honeywell Introduces Energy Efficient Solution To Smoking Issue

MOTHERWELL, SCOTLAND, 10 September, 2001 - In response to growing concerns about smoking in public places and energy efficiency, Honeywell has developed Pure Control, a simple and natural approach to providing excellent air quality.

Using the principle that hot air rises, cool air is introduced at floor level; as the occupants of the room heat the air, it rises, carrying with it any pollutants in the atmosphere, such as cigarette smoke, food odours and overpowering perfume.

The simple but effective system is managed by Honeywell’s Hometronic controller.  This easy to use and unobtrusive control panel can also be used to run lighting, heating and other appliances.  The panel is web-enabled which means that the environment can be also be managed off-site.

Pure Control has been trialled in a Manchester bar and costs
no more to install and less to run than conventional air conditioning solutions.  Michael Green, owner of the test site, Mumbo’s fine tea and cocktail bar, says: “Pure Control gives every one of my customers their own personal clean air environment.  Pollutants and odours are carried gently up and away so smokers and non-smokers can sit together in absolute comfort.”

Pure Control complies with the stringent planning criteria of Manchester City Council by addressing three of their key environmental concerns - air quality, energy consumption and noise pollution.  First, the exhaust air is filtered so that pollutants are not released into the external environment.  Secondly, the system is inherently energy efficient.  It only introduces sufficient heated or cooled air into a room to take away the actual pollution generated, and in winter, 60% of the heat in the exhaust air is recovered and returned to the room space. Thirdly, noise measurements show that the sound of the plant is barely perceptible and there is virtually no noise from the air outlets.

The Pure Control system will be available from Honeywell from
September 2001.

Notes to editors

  • The Climate Change Levy was introduced in April 2001 to
encourage businesses to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with commitments made at the Earth Summit in Kyoto in 1997.   The levy is imposed on the business use of energy for lighting, heating and power.

  • The national ventilation standard is set down in the Public Places Charter on Smoking and requires operators to provide a comfortable environment with at least 30 cubic metres per person per hour of fresh outside air.

  • Honeywell’s Hometronic is an intelligent system which can control the heating, air conditioning, lighting and other electrical appliances in a venue.  An unobtrusive, simple to use control panel manages the entire system.  The system is radio controlled and can be accessed remotely, via mobile phone or by the Internet.  Hometronic is easy to install in both old and new buildings as the radio control obviates the need for wiring.

  • Photographs of the Pure Control system in use in Mumbo’s are available.
