GlaxoSmithKline builds full - size training facility for critical pharmaceutical HVAC systems.

Wins Top Training Award at Building Services Awards.

BRACKNELL, UK, 6 November 2001 - GlaxoSmithKline at Ware, Hertfordshire, has built a full-size training facility to train its staff and contractors in the theories and practices of critical pharmaceutical HVAC processes.  Modelled on real pharmaceutical production HVAC installations, the training rig has all the features of such systems, such as a Honeywell Excel 5000 building management system with a PC-based Honeywell Excel Building Supervisor that provides information and control through graphical displays.

“HVAC is a critical service, essential for the production of pharmaceuticals,” commented GlaxoSmithKline’s project manager.  “We envisage that the training rig will become a platform for many different courses due to the extensive variety of equipment installed on it.”

The facility is already home to a five-day “Foundation of HVAC technology” course, in association with M.E. Technical Services of St Neots which delivers the lectures and developed the study notes and courseware.  The course includes thermodynamic principles, water flow balance, fans and air filtration.  More specialist courses on subjects such as instrument calibration and refrigeration are in the pipeline.

The system services two rooms and includes an air handling unit from Dalair; steam humidification from Spirax-Saco; dampers from Actionair and with constant velocity boxes, grills and diffusers all from Trox.  A redundant outside chiller unit from the Ware site was also included in the rig.

Many companies assisted the project by offering time, staff or equipment at discounted rates or free of charge.  Much of the building and fit out work was done by GlaxoSmithKline apprentices as part of their work experience.

Specialist work was carried out by sponsoring companies such as Couch, Perry and Wilkes, which designed the facility, and Honeywell which not only donated the control system but also provided engineering support to install, commission, and carry out initial training.

Being such a unique facility, the training rig has already won a lot of admiration, the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) included.  Its greatest accolade as to win the top Training Award for GlaxoSmithKline at this year’s Building Services Awards.
