Applications

For wet appliances - laundry and dishwashers - turbidity sensing provides visibility into the washing process not previously available to design engineers. This ability provides engineers with the opportunity to make better designs and to create machines with more features and options, while addressing today's efficiency requirements.

Dishwashers can benefit from the addition of turbidity sensing capabilities by incorporating newer control system techniques that select or adapt the cycle to a particular set of conditions, such as pre-washing and different detergent combinations. These control algorithms can be designed to focus on both efficiency and performance.

Clothes washers can benefit from the addition of a turbidity sensor and possibly obtain the same type of adaptive system as the dishwasher. Turbidity could also be used to monitor the rinsing of the loads to obtain better washing results. For these reasons, turbidity sensing is an important building block for the appliance design engineer to add to their toolbox before tackling the next generation of appliance designs for the late 1990's.
