Honeywell sponsors exhibition of work by artists with physical disabilities and learning difficulties : "Artability"

BRACKNELL, UK, 14 FEBRUARY 2002 - “The Place” at Letchworth Arts Centre is hosting “Artability”, a vibrant and colourful exhibition of recent work by fourteen artists with physical disabilities and learning difficulties.  Sponsored by Honeywell Home Comfort Controls, Artability is open from Mondays to Saturdays, February 23rd to March 16th 2002 inclusive.

The artists are all from North London and attend either the Flight Ways Resource Centre in Colinwood or the Norwood Ravenshead charity’s groups in Hendon and Stanmore.  Explained Nikki Catt Morrison, art tutor and facilitator these venues: “The exhibition is a celebration of the artists’ abilities and aims to break down barriers by opening people’s eyes to the wider issues surrounding disability.  The paintings are amazing, with superb use of colours, great vibrancy and confidence in technique. The knowledge that each artist has a form of disability adds an intensity to the viewer’s appreciation of their ability and self-expression.”

To accompany the exhibition, The Place is inviting members of the community to respond to the question “What does disability mean to you?”  Participants can respond through images, poetry, photography or film.  Their work will be displayed alongside the Artability exhibition

The Place is at Letchworth Arts Centre, 18-20 Leys Avenue, Letchworth, Hertfordshire.  Artability is open from February 23rd to March 16th on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 6pm, Thursdays 10am-6pm, Fridays and Saturdays 10am-4pm; closed on Sundays and Mondays.  Telephone for enquiries: 01462 670788. Web site: www.theplace.gb.com
