South Wales heating installer, Roy Enos, is a leader in heating innovations and on the golf course.

BRACKNELL, UK, 27 SEPTEMBER 2002 Roy Enos drives for excellence in home heating systems and on the golf course – and has also proved a leader in both fields.  Roy pioneered the use of Honeywell Smartfit controls among house builders, housing associations and local authorities in South Wales.  In golf, he captains the Welsh Counties Heating and Plumbing Golf Society and was 2001/2 captain of the prestigious Celtic Manor Golf Club – home of the Ryder Cup in 2010 – where he is a founder member.

“Smartfit is a great concept.  The moment I first saw, I saw its benefits for installers, house builders, housing associations and local authorities,” recalled Roy, who started his company Roy Enos Plumbing & Heating Services Ltd in 1974.  “We always install Honeywell controls – it’s a well-respected, household name.  Now we use Smartfit on all open-vented heating systems and have installed hundreds of Smartfit kits already.”

When the house builder Lovell won a contract to build 42 houses in Lewistown for the Glamorgan and Gwent Housing Association, it asked Roy to propose innovative solutions.  “We came up with three, but the pearl in the oyster was Smartfit, which had just been introduced,” he said.

“Smartfit’s snap-in connections make it quick and easy to install, but the greater benefit from our point of view is ease of maintenance.  Its telephone-style connections make it easy to change a motorised valve or cylinder thermostat, for example.  Anyone who can unplug and replug a telephone can do it!

“If there is a problem with a heating system, the householder reports a fault code, shown by the Smartfit room unit, so we know what is wrong before we travel to site.  It means we can fix a problem in one visit, instead of making a trip to diagnose the problem, going away to buy the part, and then returning to fit it.  If the householder can’t see a fault code, we know it isn’t a system fault but a user problem that can be solved on the phone.”

Roy combines his heating and golf interests as captain of the Welsh Counties Heating and Plumbing Golf Society, which has 60 members drawn from a wide area stretching from west Wales to the English border.  He explained: “Our members include heating installers, consultants, merchants and manufacturers.  We play a different course, followed by lunch, every month during the six months from spring to autumn.  It’s a great way of combining sport with heating industry fellowship.”
