Honeywell supplies Fire and Voice Alarm Systems for BAA Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal

New systems will greatly enhance the safety of Gatwick's passengers and workers

BRACKNELL, UK, 20 APRIL 2001 - BAA London Gatwick Airport is to enhance the safety of passengers and workers with new Honeywell fire and PAVA (Public Address Voice Alarm) systems in the North Terminal under a £5.7 million ($8.6 million) contract with Honeywell. Honeywell will provide system design, hardware and software, engineering, installation and project management of a Honeywell Excel LifeSafety Manager system, with completion due in September 2002. The system will provide superior fire protection so greatly enhancing the safety of Gatwick's passengers and workers . The new Honeywell system will be integrated with a similar system already installed by Honeywell in the airport's South Terminal, so meeting the users' needs for a common operator interface and shared access from control rooms in either terminal. Honeywell has already provided building management systems for both terminals and provides comprehensive preventive and breakdown maintenance services for the BMS and fire systems, using its team of resident engineers based at BAA Gatwick Airport.

"Honeywell was selected to replace the North Terminal fire system in order to achieve commonality of systems across the airport," commented Mike Freeman, project manager with Gatwick Airport Ltd. "At present, 30 per cent of the building systems in our North Terminal are from Honeywell, along with all of the South Terminal's. It makes sense to be fully standardised on Honeywell systems for maintenance and operational reasons." LifeSafety Manager is a dependable, high performance fire management system that provides primary monitoring and full control of a building's smoke and fire detection systems, sprinkler systems and emergency communications systems leading to safe evacuation of occupants.

In an emergency, every second counts. Honeywell LifeSafety Manager's advanced alarm management feature ensures that the operator has all the information needed for a swift, effective response.
When an alarm is activated, this sophisticated function immediately pinpoints where the alarm was initiated on a graphical display, and provides the appropriate action plan for that type of event at that location. Gatwick is the second largest airport in the UK and the sixth busiest international airport in the world, currently serving over 280 destinations and over 31 million passengers annually. Its development strategy focuses on the airport's expansion as a single runway, two terminal airport, as it grows to handle around 40 million passengers a year within the next ten years.
